As Part of The Cluntergate Centre’s Wandering in Horbury, aiming to engage the local public with its past and place, I was inspired by some of the stories told about the local historic figure of Victorian naturalist and eco warrior Charles Waterton, and repeat his supposed actions on a slightly larger scale.
When visiting Rome, Waterton apparently climbed to the top of St Peter’s Cathedral and hung his gloves there, only for Pope Pius VII to order him to go back up and fetch them down, which he promptly did.
